Course Description:

The Graduate Program is an advanced trial skills training program available to those who have graduated from the three-week college known as either GSM I or Spence’s former program known as The Trial Lawyers College between the dates of Aug 1994 - Sept. 2019.

Joey Low

The curriculum of the Graduate Program is developed by the Director of Staff and Curriculum Joey Low. Joey was a graduate of Spence’s program from August of 1998, back when the college was a month-long program. After graduation, he was selected by Spence to be an instructor where he was later appointed a senior instructor and Director of Curriculum for Spence’s old program. Joey was the director and lead instructor for the advanced trial skills of Grad 1 at the old college for many years and wrote the curriculum and trained the instructors himself on what is considered to be the finest and most advanced trial training skills program in the United States.

At the Graduate Program, Joey will be leading the instruction of some of the most advanced trial skills currently offered for instruction. Topics such as, “How to get the defense to strike your worst jurors” and “How to get experts to testify during voir dire” as well as “How to pick who you want to be the foreperson” are just some of the techniques that Joey has developed during his 24 years studying under the legend Gerry Spence and trying cases to verdicts with real jurors in every type of case literally all over the world.

During the program, Joey pioneered the first trial skills college where real jurors are used during mock presentations along with real judges. Joey feels that “keeping it real” in the trial skills training is something that has provided him great success and is something that was all but lost as a result of too many compromises. His advanced trial skills training takes the work back to the basics and then far beyond. He has developed a program and method that takes story telling principles and applies them to all aspects of the trial, not just the typical opening statement. His story structure presentation on where the sequence of the facts and the story should start and end has changed the way people look at trial science.

Joey will be joined by legendary trial lawyer John Zelbst aka Johnny Z who has never lost a murder case and has obtained 8-figure civil verdicts all over the country. Gerry Spence has called Johnny Z one of America’s great trial lawyers. Johnny’s story telling skill and ability to empathize with the client, the witnesses, and the jurors is also legendary. He will show you how you too can develop this skill, just as he did after he was discovered by Gerry Spence while delivering a closing argument.

Come and learn how you can get the opponents’ witnesses to testify for you, how you can develop your own style, not from mimicking but from learning how to chisel, sand, and shape the best version of yourself for the courtroom. Learn how you can express your own personal power and charisma through developing your skill at telling the truth, the whole truth, in a powerful and pithy way that will have the jury asking for more.

“When you go to law school they teach you how to be a lawyer but they don't teach you how to care. Here's the best part of GSM. you will leave different. Not a different person, but a different lawyer.”

Christian Morris AttorneyChristian Morris

“The magic and the transformation that takes place here that I find remarkable is that by becoming better human beings we become better lawyers; by digging deep into ourselves we're better able to sense what may be holding our clients back and we can get at the real story.”
