Course Description:

Prepare yourself for a 21-day journey that will provide insight into yourself, your clients, and your cases. You will learn the Spence Method and your skills as a trial lawyer will be taken to a higher level. You will be guided by experienced trial lawyers who were trained in the Method and can show you how it can change your practice, and maybe even your life.

Class at Gerry Spence Method College

The program begins by helping you strip yourself of the armor that you thought you needed for protection, but in reality, has only limited your effectiveness. You will experience first-hand the power of psychodrama and how this can be used to discover the story through the eyes of those who were involved. Several days will be spent on this powerful tool under the direction of a trained psychodramatist, learning techniques, including how to reverse roles. Sometimes you will reverse roles and learn more about yourself, and sometimes you will learn more about your clients and even your adversaries. The point of this part of the journey is gaining a far richer perspective of what happened and why, through the eyes of those involved – a story that is alive and will resonate with your audience.

Interview Process at Gerry Spence Method College

You will also be taught the Spence Method of choosing your audience for the story, the jury. This is where you will learn how to shed your armor and “show yourself” so that the jury will see you as an authentic, relatable, and trustworthy person. Techniques for dealing with troubling issues in your case will be covered. You will discover greater powers of communication that will change how you find the right jury for your case.

The next part of the journey will be how to take that perspective and integrate it into the structure that will make the story come alive. Techniques to tell the story of the case throughout the opening statement, witness examinations, and closing argument will be taught by seasoned trial attorneys who have lived the Method.

Man Doing Mock Trial at Gerry Spence Method College

All of these techniques will culminate in a jury trial at the end of the Program in which each of these elements of the Method you have been discovering come together. You will end the Program by understanding more about yourself, more about your clients, and more about your cases than you have understood before. You will be enriched.
